BIOGRAPHY
Gerrit was born in Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean on the 11th of December 1966, and he grew up in The Netherlands during a period of twenty years from the age of ten.
In Amsterdam he finished his studies of law at the University of Amsterdam. During the time of his studies he interrupted his schooling temporarily and went traveling (back-packing) for a period of
almost two years in South-East Asia, among which destinations were Thailand, India, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and South America, among which Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.
Apart from this he visited during his youth many parts of Europe and Turkey and later the United States of America. At the moment his attention is focused on Suriname and Curaçao / Dutch
Caribbean.
Gerrit has been practicing as a lawyer/barrister for an ample 10 years now and is one of the three partners in the law firm of Small Murray Scheper in Curacao, as per 2008 also a Legal Consultancy
office in Suriname. Apart from his work and traveling, children play an important role in his life. Gerrit is the proud father of four (young) children, among whom are a twin, whom he enjoys guiding
in their own further development while giving full scope to their natural gifts.
Since the year 2006 Gerrit has finally been able to reserve some free time to devote this time to giving his dream and passion, which is photography, a proper place in his life. Gerrit uses his spare
time to take detailed photographic pictures of everything that nature has to offer. In taking photographs he primarily focuses on recording the interaction that takes place between man and nature,
not losing sight of the matters produced by man.
In the year 2007/2008 Gerrit has pursued the objective of making public his photographic work by organizing an exposition and launching a website. Gerrit observes a fixed rule that out of each
separate instantaneous photograph taken by him, only a maximum of 5 originals may be offered for sale on the Curaçao market. In his experience and exercising of the art of photography, Gerrit
holds the view that a special instantaneous photograph should by its nature and value remain special by retaining a fixed limited number to be distributed. For him each instantaneous photograph is
special and an immediate way of writing history, since the very same moment will never repeat itself in time under the exact similar circumstances. Every day the incidence of light is different, as
well as the circumstances of the moment and the subject.
Gerrit will issue to a purchaser of any photograph a certificate by means of a registered and copy-right protected system. Finally, he expresses his gratitude to André van Hoop (Visuals
Graphic Studio), Carlos Tramm (Foto Tramm), Tiny van Dijk (Gravelij) and Lothar Kort (Studio Kort) for their contribution to all this.
